Overview

Al Fassia Gueliz has been a fixed point on Boulevard Mohamed Zerktouni since the 1980s, and the fact that it still fills with Marrakchis on any given evening says more than any review could. The restaurant is run entirely by women, from the kitchen to the dining room, a decision that was radical when it first opened and has since become simply part of its identity. The culinary language here is rooted in tradition: slow-cooked tagines, layered pastillas, couscous built on depth rather than spectacle. The dining room has a richly-hued formality to it: upholstered banquettes, white tablecloths pulled taut, carved archways, and warm lighting that holds the room in a soft, even glow. Service arrives in traditional dress, unhurried and precise. There is no fusion here, no reinvention, no design concept competing with the food. What Al Fassia offers instead is the kind of Moroccan cooking that generations of cooks have refined over centuries, executed in a Gueliz setting that feels both intimate and quietly confident. It is the sort of restaurant where the lamb shoulder needs no introduction and the salad course alone could constitute a meal. A second location in Aguedal adds a garden and hotel rooms; the family also runs an outpost in Windsor, England. But this original address, tucked into the modern district with no terrace and no view, remains the one that set the standard.
