Overview

Jardin Ocre takes its name from the colour of the city around it, the warm terracotta tones of Marrakech's walls and soil that define the landscape before any garden intervention. Located on the southern edge of the urban area, it functions as a botanical and ecological garden where native and adapted plant species are assembled with an attention to the specific conditions of the Marrakech climate: arid, sunny, with long dry periods broken by short, intense rain. The garden presents plant communities rather than specimen displays, grouping species by their habitat requirements and geographic origins. Moroccan native plants anchor the collection, with particular attention to species from the High Atlas foothills, the pre-Saharan zones, and the Atlantic coast, the range of environments that converge in the region south of Marrakech. The effect is less decorative than educational, though the planting has a formal logic and care that makes it genuinely beautiful in its own right. At certain hours, particularly in the morning before the heat rises, Jardin Ocre has a quality of silence that is unusual in a city of this density. The surrounding walls filter the noise without eliminating all sound, and the light, falling on grey-green foliage and ochre earth, has the warmth of somewhere further south. The garden is part of a broader ecological project that extends beyond its physical boundaries, engaging questions of water use, soil health, and plant selection in a city where rapid development has put significant pressure on the landscape.
