Overview

Terrasse des Épices has occupied the rooftop of Souk Cherifia since 2007, long enough to have earned its place in the shorthand of the city. You reach it by climbing three flights above the artisan boutiques that fill this medina shopping arcade, emerging onto a wide open-air terrace with the Koutoubia to the south and the Atlas range closing the horizon. By day, cushioned alcoves and woven reed canopies provide shade while mist fans cut the heat; by night, lanterns and patio heaters take over, and the kitchen's handwritten chalkboard menu gains the company of live music and a full cocktail bar. The cooking is Moroccan with a Mediterranean accent. The house tanjia Marrakchia, the city's emblematic slow-cooked dish, has been on the menu since opening day and remains the thing to order. Tagines, briouates, and a chocolate pastilla with dried fruits fill out a card that also makes room for grilled fish, pasta, and steaks. The bar, a rarity this deep in the souks, pours champagne, a rotating seasonal cocktail list, and a wine selection that favours Moroccan bottles. The décor leans contemporary: dark wood, rattan, modern artwork on the walls, low tables scattered with cushions. In summer, straw hats appear at every seat; in winter, warm djellabas are offered instead. It is the kind of place that adjusts to the season without losing its personality. Two floors below, a traditional pâtisserie sells handmade Moroccan pastries to take away, giving you a reason to stop in even when the terrace is full. The crowd is a reliable mix of expats, locals, and visitors, and the staff will walk you back through the souks to your riad after dinner if you need the escort.
