Overview
Mizaan opened in September 2024 on Avenue Mohammed V in Guéliz, the second address from the team behind L'Mida in the medina. The name means "balance" in Arabic, and the concept follows through: sharing plates that move between Moroccan, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean registers without settling into any single tradition. The space was built by local artisans using bejmat, wicker, clay, and sculpted plaster alongside terrazzo floors and clean contemporary lines, drawing on the city's vernacular architecture while steering well clear of orientalist cliché. The kitchen is run by Abdel Alaoui, whose menu is designed for the centre of the table. The signature Mizaan Roll fills brioche with crab and prawns, bisera frites pair fried bean sticks with smoked feta cream, and a pizzetta on traditional tafernout bread comes topped with burrata. Grilled octopus with artichokes, lamb tacos with za'atar, and a kefta with tahini fill out a menu that rewards ordering widely. The chocolate mousse has built a quiet reputation of its own. Early evening, the atmosphere is soft and conversational. After nine, a DJ takes over and the cocktail bar comes alive under a ceiling that draws its share of compliments. Past eleven, those who know the house can walk through the kitchens to reach a speakeasy with a Gatsby-era feel. It is a progression that few restaurants in Guéliz pull off with this much ease, and the crowd filling the terrace most nights suggests the balance is working.
