Overview
Mandala Society Bahia occupies three floors of a medina townhouse on Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid, a few minutes' walk from Bahia Palace. The ground level pulls you in with the smell of sourdough proofing in the open kitchen and fair-trade coffee being pulled at the bar. Upstairs, the rooftop terrace opens onto the Atlas Mountains and becomes the reason most people stay longer than they planned. The kitchen is entirely meat-free. Fish comes from local fishermen; everything else is plant-driven, organic where possible, and 95% made in-house. Mornings bring Icelandic oat pancakes drizzled with orange blossom honey, smoothie bowls thick with avocado and chia, and a Moroccan shakshuka with buckwheat and fresh coriander. Lunch shifts to charcoal-roasted Buddha bowls, a salmon hoisin burger on rye sourdough, and a plant shawarma wrap layered with smoked eggplant, shiitake mushrooms, and tahini. The Berber amlou spread and the house banana bread with carob chocolate are small revelations. Founded by Othman, a Moroccan, and Birta, an Icelander who first met in the Nordic cold, Mandala started in Essaouira before arriving in Marrakech. The design follows the philosophy: natural wood, potted greens, soft lighting, and a boho warmth that feels unhurried. It is one of the few places in the medina where vegans can eat with real variety rather than settling for a plain salad, and the specialty coffee alone justifies a detour.
