Overview
La Bottega occupies a ground-floor spot on a pedestrian stretch of Rue Imam Ali in Guéliz, opposite the Saints Martyrs church and within sight of the neighbourhood mosque. The name means "the shop" in Italian, and that is exactly what it is: part restaurant, part épicerie fine, with shelves of imported Italian charcuterie, cheese, and dried pasta running alongside the dining tables. The decor has the feel of something assembled rather than designed, in the best possible way. A green marble communal table, upholstered ballroom chairs in floral fabrics, vintage dressers in bright colours, and a plant-lined terrace that catches the sun all day. The kitchen belongs to Giancarlo Passaro and his partner Paolo, two Italians who run the place with the kind of noisy, personal warmth that makes the room feel like someone's home. The menu is short and traditional: pasta alla Norma, vitello tonnato, fritto misto, Roman-style pizza by the slice, and homemade ravioli that change through the week, with butter and sage on Fridays in the Italian manner. The truffle ravioli draw particular praise. Everything is made on-site and cooked to order, and the gelato is house-churned, with a lemon sorbet worth crossing the city for. No alcohol is served, owing to the proximity of the mosque, but nobody seems to miss it. La Bottega is not trying to impress. It is a neighbourhood Italian where the products are real, the portions are generous, and the owners greet you at the door. For a city with no shortage of ambitious restaurants, that straightforward generosity is its own kind of luxury.
