Dar Yacout

Dar Yacout sits behind an unmarked door in the Bab Doukkala quarter of the north medina, inside an 18th-century riad that ranks among the most theatrical dining rooms in all of Marrakech. The interiors are maximalist and unapologetic: soaring arches lined with hand-cut zellige, walls of polished tadelakt, ornate chandeliers reflected in floor-to-ceiling mirrors, carved cedar ceilings, and fireplaces set into stucco alcoves. The effect is part palace, part stage set, and entirely deliberate. The evening follows a fixed ritual. Guests arrive to drinks on the panoramic rooftop terrace, where the Koutoubia minaret and the Atlas Mountains hold the horizon and the light at sunset is worth the reservation alone. From there, you descend through candlelit corridors to the ground-floor salon or, in warmer months, the central courtyard, where tables are laid with rose petals and waiters in white djellabas begin a procession of dishes that unfolds over the course of the night. The set menu is a traditional diffa: a succession of salads, warm briouates, pastilla, tagines of lamb and chicken, couscous, and honeyed pastries, with wine and aperitifs included. Live Gnawa and Andalusian musicians fill the spaces between courses. One of the first medina restaurants to open to the public over forty years ago, Dar Yacout has hosted heads of state, fashion dynasties, and film stars, but it remains at heart a family-run table d'hôtes. Reservations are essential and should be made well in advance.
