Les Jardins du Lotus
Dar El Bacha, 9 Derb Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch, Marrakech 40000, Morocco
Overview
Les Jardins du Lotus occupies a restored 19th-century residence in the Dar El Bacha quarter, one of the medina's more composed northern neighborhoods, concealed from the street by the kind of door that gives nothing away. Inside, a garden unfolds around a central pond, green and densely planted, framed by pastel lounge areas with cacti rising against the walls. During the day it is a pleasant refuge. By evening, it transforms into something considerably more animated. The entertainment begins after dinner service and follows an effective sequence: oriental dance, live musicians, DJ sets. The performers work the space rather than occupy a fixed stage, moving through the tables and the garden, which collapses the distance between audience and show. The mood builds steadily from composed to festive, the music louder and more propulsive as the night progresses. On special occasions, Les Jardins du Lotus runs full-scale celebration evenings that draw a crowd from across the city. The setting gives the venue its particular quality. Few medina addresses manage to be both spatially generous and intimate, but the combination of lush planting, low seating, and an enclosed courtyard creates a room that breathes. The kitchen runs a creative menu through the evening, keeping the culinary side credible, but the reason people return is the sense of occasion the garden creates once the music begins.
