Overview
La Pause sits in the Agafay Desert, roughly forty-five minutes from Marrakech, on a landscape of compacted stone and wide silence that the property has been occupying for nearly twenty years. Accommodation divides between traditional Bedouin tents and eight pisé lodges built from mud and straw in the Berber construction method, each with a private bathroom and heating for the cold desert nights. The property has no electricity or air conditioning: candles provide the evening light, and the absence of ambient electronic noise produces the quality of silence that brings guests to the Agafay in the first place. A pool is reserved for overnight guests, its filtered water bordered by an organic garden that grows rocket, alfalfa, grapes and olive trees, the produce feeding a kitchen that serves full-board meals taken al fresco on the terrace or cross-legged on cushions inside a tent, the evenings accompanied by Gnaoua musicians. A cross-country golf course has been laid out across the desert terrain, its holes the most low-key version of the game available anywhere near Marrakech. Other activities extend into the landscape: quad-bike rides, horse treks, guided camel rides, mountain-biking, cooking classes and calligraphy sessions for those who want a different register. La Pause is one of the few places near Marrakech where the simplification is genuine: the desert is not a backdrop for luxury but the terms on which the stay operates, and twenty years of experience shows in how well those terms are managed.
