Overview

Berber Lodge stands in Douar Oumnes near Tameslouht, a village south of Marrakech, built from the earth it occupies. The walls are adobe, made from soil extracted on-site, formed into brick and stacked around the ancient olive trees that were too old and significant to remove. Ceilings in the nine rooms are structured from eucalyptus, Atlas cedar, and wild bamboo harvested locally; terra-cotta tiles made by artisans from the neighboring village cover the floors. Rattan furniture, Berber antique pieces including carved bride's chests, and 20th-century design objects share space in the rooms, creating interiors that feel assembled over time rather than decorated at once. The garden, several hectares of ancient olive grove alongside an organic vegetable plot, provides both produce and shade. The pool, twenty metres long by seven wide, sits between the olive trees in the middle of the garden, the water contained by walls of earth the same colour as the surrounding landscape. This is not a resort and does not position itself as one; it is a lodge in the truest sense, a place built from its surroundings with the logic of someone who intends to stay. Nine rooms means stays here are intimate, shared between a small group in a garden that has been growing for longer than any of them The lodge's distance from Marrakech, thirty minutes by road, is sufficient to shift the frame of reference entirely. What the city carries, the olive grove absorbs.
