Overview
La Famille has been Marrakech's quiet answer to lunch since 2015, a courtyard restaurant run entirely by women a few steps from the souks, hidden enough that the noise of the medina drops away completely once you're inside. Whitewashed arches ring a garden shaded by lemon trees, tables scattered under the branches in dappled light, the kind of hush that makes it easy to forget how close the crowds are. The atmosphere leans Mediterranean rather than strictly Moroccan: pale walls, greenery, the sense of an oasis carved out of the old city. The kitchen is vegetarian only and changes with the market, built around a simple, generous structure: a plate of seasonal vegetable dips with warm, homemade crackers to start, then a choice between a barley and market-vegetable salad, a reworked pasta, or a herb-pesto focaccia with grilled vegetables. Nothing here strains for effect. The cooking is bright, seasonal and unfussy, closer to a family table than a restaurant menu, which is presumably where the name comes from. It only opens for lunch, and reservations are recommended given how well known it has become over the years. A small boutique corner sells wood, brass and wicker objects alongside a house cookbook, one more sign that this is a place people return to rather than pass through. Come hungry, come slow, and let the lemon trees do the rest of the work.
